How does debt affect your mental health?

America is the worlds largest consuming society. We have been groomed to consume and spend. Built to enjoy all the finest luxuries that life has to offer or it a minimum we have to resort to using credit to bridge the gap of financial strife that life brings us.

When the debt load continues to grow past a our point of comfort, what happens to our mental health? Having too much debt is no different then having no debt and loosing your job, right?

The first thought that comes to mind, when we realize that our monthly payments exceed our income, is usually fear of the unknown. How does this affect our mental health, our personal relationships, our peaceful state?

Financial stress is the root cause of most divorces, aside of infidelity. What does that say about the almighty power of the dollar or the almighty power of too much debt.

How do we maintain a healthy mind while experiencing debt or loss of income?

Emotions require balance, or we soon loose control of our life in many if not all areas. To maintain balance, it is important to set your fear aside, and create a plan to navigate through the troubles of finance and debt.

Write out a budget that accounts for all of your monthly income on one side of a sheet of paper. On the other side of the paper, write down everything bill, expense and any estimated regular expense, gas, food, day care, etc. This will give you a guide to determine what expenses can be trimmed, and what income earnings can be increased if possible.

When you find that you are grossly deficient and can not make your monthly expenses, it is important to act fast to preserve your credit rating. Do not make late payments, the use of credit is the most powerful tool you have to re-negotiate your debt load, and possible re-balance your monthly payment obligations.
